RX-V861 doesn't depart from custom - it is one of the heaviest receivers. The model is equipped by HDMI ports of version 1.2a, can transmit Full HD-picture, receive audio from Blue-ray players signals by "figure" and convert analogue video for HDMI output. We can talk for a long about big possibilities, hidden in Yamaha's algorithm of processing of sound fields. It would be enough to mention that the receiver has 17 DSP programs, and the description in instruction consists of five pages. The set of decoders in Yamaha RX-V861 is quite traditional (Dolby Digital EX, DTS-ES and matrix), but firmed processing Silent Cinema should be mentioned - it allows watching a movie with pseudo-volume sound through the headphones. Amplifier's part is the strongest side of the device. Nine complete channels include seven amplifiers for EX/ES and two ones, which are intended to be built-in in ceiling acoustics, for firmed channels of surround sound expansion (Presence). By the way, exactly Presence channels give a unique possibility to lift audible placement of central speaker (Dialogue Lift) precisely in the center of Plasma Display Panel or projection screen - in order to reach an ideal binding of dialogs with video. With a help of dock YDS-10 (the option) you can connect iPod to the receiver - there is a suitable connector on the back panel. The function Music Enhancer makes the sound of MP3 with low bitrate better; however it doesn't help a lot, if a codec is moderate.

The remote control of the receiver is one of the most "voracious" - it needs 4 AAA batteries. But it is educable and can control a lot of components. Screen menu of Yamaha RX-V861 is monochrome and wide, although graphic design is too much schematized: sometimes there were questions to unclear abbreviations and terms. Nevertheless, it will be enough to spend time on setting of Scene function once - 17 patterns for all life events and four buttons of direct access to the remote control - and forget it as a nightmare. The algorithm of YPAO setting is working great. A set of test, noise sending is received by microphone, analyzed by processor, after that the result is showed. The system checks: a level of external noise (we had to start the test again twice), availability of the speakers (if some of them are not connected, they won't be taken into account later), volume level of all channels in decibels, the distance to the speakers systems, connection polarity (sometimes there is a notification of phase error); and at the end AFC of all speakers is equalized. Playing music in stereo mode differs by good reserve of dynamics; there were no evident artefacts in multichannel variant, even at high volume. I want to mention elaborate usability of the remote control, despite of the fact that Return button is made precisely for left-handers.

Nine-lined, parametric equalizer offers 3 standard modes: Natural, Flat and Front. In the first mode high frequencies are smoothed in all speakers systems, in the second mode everything is clear, and in the third, the most interesting, mode parameters of all surrounding speakers adapt to the characteristic of front pair, which is usually the most expensive. We liked sound result in Flat mode most of all - the changes, happened with quality of space effects' transmission, were heard by the naked ear.
