KEF Q400b Subwoofer

Q400b takes one of the budget positions in the line of KEF subwoofers, complementing Q series. The policy of the company on a clear rectangular design with black matte front wall impacted the case of this model too. It is a cube with the side of 33 cm. There are no any frills: a 250-mm speaker on the front panel and the control panel on the back. Acoustic design is a closed body. An efficient digital amplifier of D class with the power of 250W is responsible for amplification of the signal. Control and switching are quite standard except the special, high-level connector and the equalizer’s switch. There is a convenient adapter for the unusual connector, in which the wires of end amplifier are securely fixed by screws. The equalizer allows you to raise the sensitivity of the subwoofer of the frequency of 40 Hz to +6 dB or +12 dB depending on opacity of a room of the position of the device itself. The connectors of the linear input and LFE are combined.

Q400b plays quite vividly, dynamically and with certainty in tones. However, the timbres of the instruments become noticeably simpler and the sound image slightly blurs. Attack is a bit softened. The upper bass is limited by frequencies, so you can’t sue the sub with the smallest satellite speakers. The model copes well with acoustic compositions, but sometimes it doesn’t keep up with fast modern electro music. In our case we achieved dense bass and best uniformity of response with the use of equalizer at the position of +6 dB.
